Working "in" not "on" a book

Last week at Rollins, David McCullough (biographer and author of 1776, John Adams and Harry Truman, etc.) not only spoke in the Knowles Chapel on Friday night, but that afternoon held an informal session at which he discussed his writing life.

What I came…

Resistance - Do you need it?

This summer, for the third time, I'm reading Barry Lopez's gem, Resistance.  This slim volume is fiction with more truth telling than a witness under oath (forgive the analogy inspired by recent events in Orlando's courtrooms).

Written by Mr. Lopez as separate "memoir-ettes" (my word) in the voices of fictionalized characters, Resistence depicts the turning points in artist's lives that woke them up to getting their true work done in the world no matter…

27 Days in Turkey: Discovering Buried Treasures

Another Edge Travel Adventure

This summer, my husband, Hoyt, and I had the unique joy of visiting Turkey. We left May 23 and returned June 20. Our theme for the trip: visit Turkey's world heritage sites and get acquainted with Turkey's people and current culture.

What are these sites?

"The World Heritage List includes 936 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the…

The Perfect Little Story

The little car accident that I heard about recently from a family member became the story I wrote about for the workshop. The dialogue was the easy part once I figured out what might be the interesting part to write about. Vanessa, my writing buddy gave me an idea to show more comedy In this piece. She is not the first to mention showing humor in my writing and I think I will explore this and see where it might lead me.

By the way, it's Easter and I didn't do anything religious today… Continue

My story now available at The Center for Spiritual and Cultic Abuse web site

My story, Affinity for Windows, first published in Shifting Gears: Small Startling Moments In and Out of the Classroom by Red Pepper Press, 2004, is a short version of my Catholic childhood ending with my mother's death, my involvement with Young Life evangelicalism, my dropping out of college for a 17-year-long commitment to The Way International (1970-1987), my disturbing experience in The Way's Research Department, my rejection of The Way, and finally my return to…

Sharing my fundamentalist cult experience with Rollins College students

Two days ago I had the privilege of addressing a class on Christianity at Rollins College. The professor, Dr. Creston Davis, had asked me to talk about my experience in a fundamentalist cult, The Way International, in which I’d spent 17 years (1970-1987).

Creston assigned students to read my memoir,…

Erasing cultural history and avoiding the conversation

A new edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer comes out in February. (February!)

And I'm surprised and upset about the changes the editor has made. As the saying goes, I feel some kind of way about it.

Alan Gribben (Auburn University) edited the new versions for NewSouth Books. The 2011 versions will remove all mentions of the "n" word and replace it with "slave." Also edited: Injun… Continue
